So there have been a few things lately that John and I have well, disagreed on. I also want to say that I am open to being wrong, and willing to listen to others opinions. With that said I am asking for yours on a few things. It might seem silly, but I would really like to know if I am being dumb here.
#1 - Look at the picture above. This sweet little thing came home the other day with a Martial Arts book. He has been practicing kung foo poses and moves ever since. Jack wants to get into a martial art. Johns said ok, you can do wrestling again because it is the best martial art. (by the way he did it last year and it wasn't quite his cup of tea) Tell me if I'm crazy but I never considered wresting a martial art. Seriously, what wrestler gets to work on sweet poses like the one he is working on?! You should see his running kick...super sweet! So I guess my question is, how can you say no to a kid like this and try to throw him in silly tights again?
#2- Take a look at this nasty ankle sprain. Notice the detail in the swelling/bruising right up to the toes. Now tell me if you think anyone should be playing football on this thing. (obviously not pro's, they can do what they want because they get millions and dr's who administer cortizone shots to play injured) So I am being a lame wife telling John he shouldn't play on it?

You ask for others opinion and give half the story. You've been watching too many political ads. As for feedback:
1- I will compose my response in three parts: A) Jackson was wishy washy on wrestling because he had to pay attention to the coach and do drills. Bottom line, he loved wrestling, he hated the discipline. That will be the same in any sport or "martial art". B) World class wrestling training in MN is $60 for 4 months and any other martial art is hundreds of bucks and he'll end up with the same opinion in the end. C) We put him in wrestling initially because he wanted to learn it and we wanted him to stop hitting people. It did help in that respect. A striking based martial art will undo that if he doesn't learn the discipline aspect.
Bottom line, he wants to take a year off of wrestling and do swimming. Good for him.
2) The ankle isn't that bad. I played, we won and I didn't injure it any further. As Jackson would say, "Pain makes you more of a man." Maybe you can't handle a man!!!
I believe change can happen.
I believe Jackson can learn discipline.
I believe I can play flag football.
I believe change can happen when we all band together.
YES WE CAN!!!

Does everyone see now what I have to put up with? Ughhh. To rebut-
a: you know the class size would be way smaller a a dojo or whatever they call them now days.(making it easier to pay attention)
b: it was more than $60, but who is counting. c:discipline is one of the fundementals of all martial arts. (it says so right in the book jack took home from the library!)
2) Your ankle isn't that good either. I still don't think it was worth the risk.
Lastly, if you do believe in change, why don't you listen to me for a change!!
I am tempted to let you guys keep going back and forth. Regardless Josh and I got a few good chuckles tonight. I second the swimming call, it can be a martial art right? (Sorry Jamie, I know I'm not helping.) With that in mind,
I would have been right beside you telling Josh he needed to RICE his ankle (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate) there's no way I would have supported him on playing on it, with that said, he probably would have made his own decision as well :)
Jackson's Sport
Jamie's Choice - Martial Arts
John's Choice - Wrestling
Compromise - Grappling, a combo of martial arts and wrestling
John's Injury
Jamie's choice - refrain from football until healed
John's choice - Play with purple toes
Compromise - Take up swimming. There's the exercise benefit but water pressure to reduce swelling.
When my opponents would choose a side I remain as neutral as possible in order to receive everybody's vote! A vote for me is a vote for bi-partisanship.

Okay so I want to side with Jamie that certainly Wrestling is not a Martial Art. However, since it is past midnight, I am too tired to even spell marshall, or martial :) accurately I decided to google, "is wrestling a Martial Art"
Unfortunately, according to Wikipedia It does qualify as a martial art.
Martial arts are systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat. Martial arts share a single objective: to defeat one or more people physically and to defend oneself or others from physical threat.
In the Americas, Native Americans have a tradition of open-handed martial arts, which includes wrestling.
I hate to provide any support to John's claim. I did not see the proper research documentation to prove Wikipedia's information, but I am giving them the benefit of the doubt.
I believe Karate would be far more exciting, and clearly up the alley Jack is looking down!!!
Now on the ankle! P-Lease! Everyone knows playing on that is not so brilliant. Just enough swelling and bruising not to know that you have really hosed yourself! John, and you consider yourself the smart one in the family.............. Just Kidding. We all know who the real brains behind the operation is!
That ankle looks bad I would not let Jarom play either. You could let him see the different kinds of martial arts and let him decide what he would like best.
Ok Ok, so I guess I will concede that wrestling is technically a "martial art." I just don't think that wrestling is what he had in mind when he brought that book home that was full of pics of kung-fu and karate. Its like him bringing home a book on how to make homemade ice cream that he wants to try out and you telling him go eat that old frosty in the freezer that melted and you didn't finish last week. Yes, it is ice cream...no its not the kind he wanted/aked for. Plus it is old, hard and frostbitten.

A few key points:
- We must not doubt the validity of Wikipedia.
- Jackson needs the discipline of some sort of sport.
- Swimming is probably the best choice since he likes it just as much or more than "martial arts".
- In playing injured not only did I have a good time, I proved to my sons that you can overcome obstacles if you only have discipline (what they need).
- Jamie is the best.
Judo = martial art + wrestling
Problem solved.
Yours truly,
Bubba the Hutt, Princess of Canada (although I do not have the official paperwork to back that up)
Funny stuff!!
I have no comment.
Wow, what else could I say to all of this back and forth. I do want to be clear that if I have learned one thing as a doctoral student, I have learned that wikipedia is not a valid source for accurate information. This is even supported by high school teachers. Please consult a real reference book for accurate information regarding wrestling as a martial art. Wikipedia can be edited by anyone and therefore can be assumed that John himself put the information in about wrestling. On the other hand wikipedia could be correct, but verification is needed. Just as a note, all boys and girls alike need a hobby/sport to love - why not soccer? :) Oh and also your ankle is completely nasty - but way to be a man!
I'm totally on Jamie's side.
He seriously WANTED to play on that foot? Is he INSANE??? John, you were way lucky.
I think boys should be able try out different activities. Something might click more than another, even if it requires the same amount of attention and discipline.
Oh my gosh....Chad and I just laughed so loud our kids came to see what was happening! You two are the funniest! I miss you guys! Come to Vegas and visit!
Now children, don't fight, even if it does give me a side splitting guffaw. Nana
Wikipedia is Satanic. Now Conservapedia, that's quality.
Wrestling is a martial art. Regardless of how poor an artform it may be, you cannot deny the number move in school related fights.... The move is called the TPP.
T - ackle
P - in down
P - unch
Since this is well know, JP is working the boys well. At some point, a skilled defender will repell the TPP and when that happens a true Martial Art will land you in serious legal trouble. "Seven pounds of pressure on a non-bent knee boys... seven pounds and the knee will lock up and go the other direction... if that happens you best have that umbrella policy updated!"
The safe play is sticking to wrestling. I grew up in NY. This is the state of sue for a living... take my experience to heart. My Mike will learn a true martial art when he learns to control impulse power. (Who knows when that will happen. Thanfully for me... I was 21. I cannot even think about where I would be if I knew that stuff earlier in life.)
Debra and I both feel this playful banter is priceless. We are happy to see so many still enjoying this form of expression.
JP - That ankle looks toast. I can see your point about manning up and going out again to risk permanent injury... but think about the age of responsibility... will they remember this particular lesson versus the cost to you - potentially.
Besides... think also of the value of listening to Mother. If boys see Dad listening to Mother... especially when she says no... think about the message there! It took me several years to learn that lesson. Knowing you... you already have that one down/learned... but I say it aloud for my benefit.
Look at that, Anonymous has now taken form in "It's not your fault". You should listen to him, he knows all about wrestling.
He still claims that his inspiration behind "the small package" is wrestling.
You should ask him about it some time.
Truthfully, I don't want to get any firsthand details about "it's not your fault's" small package. Very disturbing.
